How we check prices

Every price on VPNtally is the one the provider's own website shows. We don't convert currencies, estimate missing numbers or copy prices from other sites.

“Renewal stated” — how many plans have a renewal price the provider actually shows. Where it doesn't, we write “not stated” and leave that plan out of totals that need a renewal.

Which buyer we are

Many providers show different prices depending on where you are. We check as a buyer in the United States, the United Kingdom and the eurozone (from Germany), and show each price in the currency that buyer is charged in. Where a provider charges everyone the same price in one currency (Mullvad in euros, PIA and IPVanish in US dollars), that price is shown for every market and marked *. To order such a price among the others we use the European Central Bank's daily rate; the price itself is never converted. A market we don't collect yet shows “no data”.

How often

Every 6 hours. A price that hasn't been confirmed for 48 hours is no longer shown as current. Each page says when the prices were checked and when they last changed.

How we count the 1-, 2- and 3-year cost

For every plan a provider sells we add the first payment and as many renewals as it takes to reach that length, including any free months the plan comes with, and show the cheapest combination. For example, a 1-year plan kept for 3 years is the first payment plus two renewals.

Things to know

  • Sales tax or VAT may be added at checkout, depending on your country; where a provider says its price excludes tax, so do we.
  • Some providers test different prices on different visitors. ExpressVPN, for example, shows more than one price list, so a change you see here can be a different test variant rather than a real price change.
  • Coupon codes and checkout-only discounts aren't included.
